History
Matilda of Flanders, the wife of William the Conquerer, was the Duchess of Normandy and Queen of England.
When William I was about to invade England, Matilda used her own money to outfit a battleship, the Mora, as a gift to her husband. It is said that the bow of the Mora was a gilded child, his right hand pointing towards England, and an ivory horn in his mouth. While William I was in England, Matilda served as regent of Normandy. She ruled successfully in his absence, with no major uprisings or unrest.
Matilda fell ill in the summer of 1083, and died in November of the same year. In his grief, her husband William I the Conqueror gave up his favorite sport, hunting.
