History
Montezuma I, the second emperor of the Aztecs and the fifth ruler of Tenochtitlan, ruled from 1440 to 1469.
Montezuma’s reign is marked by two of his deeds. First, he created the Triple Alliance of the Aztecs, Texcoco and Tlacopan, greatly expanding the territory of the Aztec Empire. Second, he built a system of aqueducts and water pipes in the city-state of Tenochtitlan, which significantly reduced the number of deaths from hunger, dirty water and disease.
Legends say that the god Huitzilopochtli led the ancestors of the Aztecs south from their native land of Aztlan to the shores of Lake Texcoco in the Anahuac Valley. Having discovered an island in the middle of the lake, people saw on it an eagle sitting on a cactus and clutching a snake in its claws. Taking this as a good omen, they built the city of Tenochtitlan on the island.
