History

Ramses II, also known as Ramses the Great, was the third pharaoh of Ancient Egypt from the dynasty. He is considered by many to be the greatest, most famous and most powerful pharaoh of the New Kingdom. Later, the heirs of Pharaoh and the entire Egyptian people named him “The Great Ancestor.”

The throne name of Ramses II begins with the words “Usermaatra Setepenra”, which means “Strong in truth Ra, Chosen of Ra”. Therefore, the ancient Greeks named him Ozymandius. Ramses fought a lot. He sent several expeditions to the Levant to establish Egyptian rule in Canaan. He also sent troops south to Nubia – stories of these campaigns are carved on the walls of the temples of Beit el-Wali and Gerf Hussein.

At the beginning of the reign of Ramses II, he built cities, temples and monuments, and in the Nile Delta he erected a new capital, Per-Ramses. There he collected troops for campaigns in Syria. At the age of 14, Ramses was appointed prince regent of his father Seti 1, and he ascended to the throne as a teenager (he was not even twenty). Ramesses ruled from 1279 to 1213 BC. e. – 66 years and 2 months, according to the Egyptian historian Manetho.

Egyptologists now think differently. According to their calculations, Ramses II ascended the throne on May 31, 1279 BC. BC, on the 27th day of the third season – the time when the Egyptians were harvesting. Pharaoh died at the age of 90 or 91, there is no exact data. He celebrated 13 (or 14) Heb-sedi – holidays on a grand scale, the first of which was celebrated on the day of the 30th anniversary of the pharaoh, and all the following ones every 3 years. In this Ramses surpassed all his royal colleagues.

Ramses was buried in the Valley of the Kings, and then the mummy was transferred to the royal hiding place. Scientists found it in 1881, and now it lies in the Egyptian National Museum.
