History

William I, known as William the Conqueror, was the first Norman king of England and ruled from 1066 to 1087.

In 1066, William I, Duke of Normandy, invaded and conquered England in the Norman Conquest. In the decisive battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066, his troops killed King Harold II and defeated his army. The Norman conquest forever changed the course of English history. Commercially, religiously and culturally, England at once became much more closely connected with continental Europe.

Also, by order of Wilhelm, the famous “Book of the Last Judgment” was compiled – a compilation of materials from the land census of most of England and parts of Wales.
