Xiang Yu was the ruler of the Chu kingdom during the last years of the Qin Dynasty. His grandfather Xiang Yan was a renowned general, politician and strategist.
A born warrior, Xiang Yu supported his uncle Xiang Liang’s rebellion against the Qin dynasty and largely ensured its success. At the battle of Juilu in 207 BC. e. at the head of an army of 50,000, he defeated the Qin army of 400,000. Soon after, he occupied Guanzhong, burned down the palace and massacred the entire Qin imperial family.
In 206 BC. e. the founder of the Han dynasty sent troops to fight Xiang Yu. He won several battles, but betrayal and lack of supplies led him to defeat in 202 BC. e. Faced with the threat of captivity, he chose to take his own life. Xiang Yu has remained in history as a man of unsurpassed courage, albeit sometimes reckless.
