History

Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra (kingdom in present-day Syria), was born around 240 AD. e. She became famous for her beauty and the fact that she led Palmyra against the Roman Empire.

In 270 AD, Zenobia’s troops invaded the territory of the Roman Empire, took control of most of its eastern lands, and even captured Egypt. Until the middle of 271, the queen formally remained a vassal of Rome, but her territory stretched from Ankyra in the central part of Asia Minor to southern Egypt. In 272, the Roman army under the leadership of the emperor Aurelian defeated the troops of Zenobia, and she herself was captured. It is believed that she was exiled to an estate near Rome, where she spent the rest of her life.

In Zenobia’s kingdom, education was highly valued, and many scientists and philosophers flocked to the court. She was tolerant of her subjects and protected their cultural diversity.
